Steps to Regaining Consciousness

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

Chapter 18

A Daily Practice

One of the most effective ways of going inside yourself and getting to know who you are is to spend daily time in some sort of mindfulness meditation. Whether you do this first thing in the morning or last thing before bedtime (or both), you should find a special place where you will not be disturbed. You may have to inform other members of the household that this is your “quiet time” and to please not interrupt you for a certain period of time.

Creating Your Quiet Space

It is usually helpful to go to the same spot each time you meditate. If you are fortunate enough to have a special room where you can be alone, then you can decorate it in a way that creates a mood of serenity and calm. You can add items that enhance your meditation experience such as candles, a diffuser for incense or essential oils like lavender and geranium, and a mala (beads). You can also create a small altar or space on a side table for your journal, a book of inspirational readings, and a small item or picture that holds a special meaning for you. Even if you don’t have a space you can dedicate entirely to meditation, a quiet space can be created in the corner of your bedroom or guest room. Just be sure there is a comfortable place to sit and a positive, peaceful feel to it.

What Do I Do?

If you are new to meditation, it may feel challenging at first. I encourage you to experiment with different types of meditation to find what feels right for you. There are many good books on meditating and even apps, such as “Calm” and “Headspace,” that can help you with this.

When you are just starting out, forget about any special postures, just be comfortable. Be gentle, pay attention to your breath, treasure silence. Start with just 10 minutes, which will feel like an eternity when you start. Don’t expect anything. Just be. And accept that you will have many thoughts while you meditate. That’s normal. Welcome them and let them float by like clouds. Ending with an inspirational reading is helpful—some positive and uplifting thought you can take with you back into your daily routine. Most importantly, breathe!

Your goal with a daily practice of meditation is to set the intention to go within yourself, and to do it every day. As you practice, you may want to increase your time and to journal your thoughts and feelings.

Discovering the method by which you survived and the associated feelings is a primary goal in becoming aware of why you do the things you do. This is vitally important in Self-discovery. It is only when you know what certain feelings are really about and why certain behaviors developed, that you can begin to take charge of your life.
